Parent company of WhatsApp, meta, has announced that the app will no longer be supported starting January 1, 2025, on older Android and iPhone devices.
According to a report from IOL, WhatsApp will cease to function on Android devices running KitKat or earlier versions. This includes various well-known models from brands like Motorola, Samsung, HTC, LG, and Sony.
Meta has made this decision to align with the fastest technology. Additional to this this move aligns with WhatsApp’s strategy to adopt newer technologies, such as end-to-end encryption, multi-device compatibility, advanced video calling, and AI-powered features, which older devices cannot support.
As per the IOL report, following models will no longer support WhatsApp from January 2025:
- Samsung: Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Ace 3, Galaxy S4 Mini
- Motorola: Moto G (1st Gen), Razr HD, Moto E 2014
- LG: Optimus G, Nexus 4, G2 Mini, L90
- HTC: One X, One X+, Desire 500, Desire 601
- Sony: Xperia Z, Xperia SP, Xperia T, Xperia V
iPhone users running iOS 15.1 or earlier versions will have until May 5, 2025, to update their operating systems. Owners of the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus will need to either upgrade their devices or update their iOS to continue using WhatsApp.
To maintain access to WhatsApp, affected users should either upgrade their devices or ensure their operating systems are up to date. Android users need to update to at least Android 4.0.3 (KitKat), while iPhone users must install iOS 16 or newer.
