Syrian rebels have claimed that they toppled President Bashar al-Asaad 24-year long rule over country.
As the rebels have gained control over country’s capital Damascus, they made the announcement on state-run television.
As per the latest development, President fled from the country. The rebels are set to form the caretaker government and they also freed all “political prisoners.”
Fighters in a broadcast on TV announced that the mujahidin and citizens of Syria would preserve the property of the “free country”.
BBC reported them saying “Long live Syria, free and proud. To all Syrians, whatever their sect.”
Key Development in Syria
The Lebanese-Syrian border at Masnaa is packed as thousands of people are waiting in to cross it. They wanted to enter their country following fall of Asaad regime.
Militants said Syria is free from “tyrant” Asaad now as the latter fled from the country. However, nobody knows his location so far. Reports say he has left the capital Damascus by plane for an unknown destination.
Reports say Hezbollah which backed al-Asaad government has announced withdrawal of its forces from key locations.
Rebels have taken control of Syria’s important city Homes and they also entered Damascus, taking control of the capital.
Bashar al-Asaad forces have earlier gathered in eastern Syrian city Deir Ezzor , the biggest city, where they surrendered to rebels, as per reports.
Afghan Taliban are celebrating the end of the Bashar al-Asaad rule over Syria, according to international media.
US President Joe Biden administration said it is closely monitoring the “great development” in Syria.
Iran and Russia which have long been backing the Asaad regime have so far issued no statement.
Prime Minister of Syria Mohammed Ghazi al-Jalali has called for free elections. In an interview with Al-Arabiya, he said he is in contact with rebel commander Abu Mohammed al-Jawlani.
