TikTok is likely to implement these restrictions globally in coming weeks. It has notified that TikTok will ban the “Bold Glamour,” filters which gives the effects like smooths skin, enhances lips, and alters eye shapes. Filters that create illusions for teens will not be available to them.
However the filters that give humorous effects, such as those that add animal ears or exaggerated facial features, will still be available to teens.
TikTok stated in a press release that it had commissioned a study by the UK-based organization Internet Matters to explore how online platforms influence teenagers’ sense of identity and their relationships.
This study revealed shocking results, exposing that beauty filters on social media platforms often led the teens towards complexes. Users become so immersed in this illusion that they begin trying to meet these unrealistic beauty standards.
Following these results, TikTok has decided to take important measures to reduce the hazardous effect of social media platforms on the mental well being of teenagers.
Furthermore, TikTok has announced it will enhance its efforts to block users under the age of 13 from accessing the platform.
