Supreme Court (SC) has submitted that the job quota reserved for the children of government employees is unconstitutional.
This verdict has issued in response to a petition filed by a General Post Office (GPO) worker.
Justice Naeem Akhtar issued an 11 page judgement.
According to this the court invalidated all policies related to job quotas for the children of government employees.
Court decision also struck down specific provisions within the civil service rules of Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Balochistan.
As per decision Section 11A of the Sindh Service Rules, Section 4(10) of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Civil Service Rules, and Section 12 of the Balochistan Civil Servants Rules are invalid.
According to the judgment government jobs for the children and widows of civil servants contradicts the Constitution of Pakistan.
However, the court specified that this ruling would not implement for individuals already appointed under these policies.
According to the ruling families of martyrs, law enforcement officers, and those involved in counterterrorism efforts would not be impacted.
The court also rejected the notion that the prime minister could have the authority to relax rules related to these quotas.
Supreme Court also highlighted that true progress is only attainable through merit-based hiring.
In its written decision SC mentioned that appointments based on factors other than merit undermine equality in public service.
