Bangladesh court has issued arrest warrants for former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who fled to India after a student-led movement.
Chief prosecutor of Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal Mohammad Tajul Islam has confirmed the court’s decision. “The court has ordered to arrest Sheikh Hasina and make sure her appearance in the court on November 18,” he stated.
Islam added that Hasina has been accused for serious human rights abuses. She was involved in mass arrests and killings of political opponents.
After the students revolution Hasina has not seen in Bangladesh.
According to reports, last time Hasina was seen near a military airbase in New Delhi.
After she fled from Bangladesh the Bangladeshi government revoked her diplomatic passport. Although there is an extradition treaty between Bangladesh and India, it allows refusal for “political” crimes.
Hasina’s government set up the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) to investigate war crimes from the 1971 independence war.
UN and human rights groups criticized this tribunal. They claim that Hasina used ICT to target her political rivals.
Now Bangladesh court has accused Hasina for many allegations including mass murder of protesters.
