Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina left her palace as large crowds of demonstrators calling for her resignation wandered the streets of Dhaka and the army leader was scheduled to address the country, according to a source who spoke to AFP on Monday,.
Clapping crowds joyfully waved flags and joyfully celebrated, with some even dancing atop a tank. Meanwhile, a close aide to the beleaguered monarch said she had moved from her castle in the capital to a “safer place.”
When asked if Hasina will step down, a top advisor told AFP that her resignation was a “possibility.” Hasina’s son encouraged the nation’s security services to prevent any challenge to her authority.
The person close to Hasina told AFP, “She wanted to record an address, but she could not get a chance to do that.”
A military spokesperson told AFP that Wakeruz Zaman, the head of Bangladesh’s army, will address the country on Monday afternoon without providing any other information.
According to an official statement, Waker informed commanders on Saturday that the armed forces “always stood by the people.”
Earlier on Monday, in defiance of a statewide curfew, protesting students in Bangladesh have called for a march to the nation’s capital, Dhaka.
