On Monday, an accountability court in Rawalpindi extended the physical remand of PTI founder Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, by 10 days in a new Toshakhana case.
Imran, 71, has been detained at Adiala Jail for nearly a year following his convictions in four cases: two Toshakhana references, the cipher case, and the Iddat case, in which Bushra Bibi is also implicated.
While Imran’s sentences in the Toshakhana cases were suspended and he was acquitted by the Islamabad High Court in the cipher case in June, he has been cleared of multiple other charges filed since the events of May 9, 2023. His initial arrest on that date led to nationwide riots and a subsequent government crackdown on him and his party.
Recently, an Islamabad district and sessions court accepted appeals from Imran and Bushra Bibi against their convictions in the Iddat case. However, shortly after their acquittal, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) re-arrested them in a new Toshakhana case, thwarting their hopes for release.
On July 14, NAB secured an eight-day remand for Imran in the Toshakhana case. Concurrently, Lahore police “arrested” him in connection with a dozen other cases, including the attack on the Corps Commander House. He is currently under a 10-day remand for investigation related to the May 9 incidents.
Imran and Bushra Bibi petitioned the Islamabad High Court on July 18 against their remand in the Toshakhana case.

In the latest hearing held at Adiala Jail, NAB requested Judge Muhammad Ali Waraich to grant a 14-day extension to the couple’s physical remand. Instead, the judge extended it by 10 days and scheduled the next hearing for August 8, directing the submission of an investigation progress report at that time.
