According to the Federal Investigation Agency, rights campaigner Sarim Burney was detained in Karachi on suspicion of human trafficking on Wednesday, as reported by Geo News.
They added that Burney was detained as soon as he arrived in Karachi from the United States, citing the US government’s allegation as the basis for the detention.
According to FIA, Burney is charged with smuggling over 25 minors into the US and obtaining their adoption through illicit means.
According to the media reports, there have been claims of smuggling 17 minors into the US, and an inquiry has been launched into the subject.
According to the organization’s website, the organization manages the Sarim Burney Welfare Trust International, a non-profit trust that “represents the oppressed and less privileged population.”
The website states that the trust has been pursuing social justice, and as part of this effort, a legal assistance committee made up of qualified local and international attorneys has been created.
It further states that the trust offers “legal services for child abuse, harassment, sexual assault, human trafficking, domestic violence, violation of human rights, workers compensation rights and other serious crimes” .
