The Election Commission of India has declared results of all Lok Sabha seats with ruling BJP winning on 240 seats, Congress 99 and rest go to the allies of the both main parties.
There are total 543 seats in lower house of the parliament of India and results have been declared on 542 as the counting on a seats in Mahrashtra still under process. Over 630 million people voted for the candidates of different parties, mainly for Congress led INDIA bloc and BJP led NDA (National Democratic Alliance), in the national poll. The elections were the largest democratic exercise and concluded in seven phases- from April 19 to June 1.
None of the political parties single handedly able to form the government, needing partners support to reach to the simple majority number 272 in Lok Sabha. Counting held on 542 seats as the BJP candidate from Surat elected unopposed. However, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has claimed the victory and set to become the PM of India for third consecutive terms, according to reports.
Results are called a setback for the BJP which is far behind the seats it got during 2014 and 2019’s general elections. The Hindu nationalist party won 303 and 282 Lok Sabha seats during the two previous polls. However, the polls outcome shows a major gain for the Congress which secured 99 seats as compared to 52 in 2019’s national vote. Congress has also declared that it would consider today (Wednesday) whether to form government with the support of its partners (INDIA bloc) or sit at the opposition benches.
The results shows the BJP alliance NDA secured total 294 seats which INDIA succeeded on 232. The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and Bihar based JDU emerged as main power broker in the polls as they bagged 16 and 12 seats in the polls. These 28 Lok Sabha seats plus other traditionally belong to BJP led alliance but some political observes still about their alignment. Congress has hinted that it would contact both parties. The TDP and JDU plus some other minor parties make the figure 294 of NDU alliance, almost 22 more than the required magic figure for form the government. The BJP has to face major setback in three main states which include UP and Rajasthan where Congress gain victory with the support of the partners.
