Punjab, including Lahore, is experiencing scorching temperatures reaching up to 50°C. However, there is a silver lining as intermittent rains and gusty winds are forecasted to offer respite from the heatwave.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) predicts sporadic rains and gusty winds in Lahore and various parts of Punjab starting Tuesday evening and continuing for the next two days. These rains are expected to bring down the mercury levels, alleviating the oppressive heat.
According to PMD, a continental air mass prevails over most areas of Pakistan, with high pressure dominating the upper atmosphere until May 28. However, from the evening of May 28, a shallow westerly wave is anticipated to affect the northern regions of the country.
Under these atmospheric conditions, Lahore and the plains of Punjab are likely to continue experiencing heatwaves on Tuesday, with daytime temperatures forecasted to remain 4 to 6°C above normal levels. However, the arrival of intermittent rain, wind, and thunderstorms from Tuesday evening until June 1 is expected to gradually reduce the intensity of the ongoing heatwave.
In Lahore, maximum temperatures are expected to range between 43-45°C on Tuesday and 42-44°C on Wednesday.
During the past 24 hours, Lahore and the plains of Punjab experienced scorching heat. Bhakkar and Rahim Yar Khan recorded the highest temperatures in the province, reaching 50°C. Kot Addu and Dera Ghazi Khan followed closely behind with maximum temperatures of 49°C. In Lahore, the mercury peaked at 44°C, with an evening relative humidity of 36 percent.
