According to Sanjay Leela Bhansali, modern performers find it challenging to match the “sur and note” that Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai, and Madhuri Dixit performed at in Devdas.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali is enjoying the popularity of his freshly launched series, Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar, in spite of criticism.
Over the course of his more than 30-year career, the filmmaker has collaborated with some of the best actors. In a recent interview, Bhansali discussed how acting and filmmaking have changed over time, and how modern filmmakers may not be the same as those he worked with on Devdas, which starred Shah Rukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit Nene, and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan nearly 28 years ago.
Examining the complexities of the relationship between an actor and a director, SLB pointed out that although acting techniques and styles have evolved throughout time, the fundamentals of producing strong performances have not.
“I believe that methods have evolved in the film industry.” A director now has a new perspective on movies. The screenwriters are utilising unique writing styles and creating a diverse range of roles. For Indian cinema, this is a fantastic moment. The Guzaarish filmmaker told Bollywood Hungama, “Wonderful work is being done, and great films are being made today.”
He clarified that because performing styles and audience preferences are always changing, it could be difficult for modern performers to replicate the operatic, high-pitched performances from his 2002 film Devdas.
“Devdas was performed at a high pitch and operatic note, which made it challenging to execute the sur (tone). Directors used to require that performers act in a certain way, but these days, which is also great, they want actors to be subtle and underplayed. The performances of Madhuri Dixit, Kirron Kher, Aishwarya Rai, and Shah Rukh Khan in Devdas are noteworthy and may be beyond the capabilities of contemporary performers, as they required a more profound comprehension of the acting styles employed by Shah Rukh,” Bansali said.
