Sister of renowned models Bella and Gigi Hadid, and Fashion Designer Alana Hadid has launched a film production and distribution venture known as Watermelon Pictures, as reported by Deadline.
Watermelon Pictures is envisioned as an independent film label rooted in Palestinian ownership, aiming to champion filmmakers worldwide who are underrepresented in the industry, particularly focusing on cultural diversity and societal issues.
Watermelon Pictures, as described on its official website, is dedicated to raising voices often marginalized in the cinematic realm.
The company is dedicated to sharing untold narratives and believes in leveraging creative expression to enact societal change.
Their inaugural project, a documentary titled ‘Walled Off,’ sheds light on the ‘Walled Off’ Hotel in Bethlehem, conceived and financed by renowned British street artist Banksy. Situated in the shadow of the Israeli West Bank barrier wall, this hotel serves as a poignant symbol of artistic resistance amid political adversity.
The documentary ‘Walled Off’ boasts contributions from notable figures, including Anwar Hadid, brother to Alana Hadid, and Roger Waters of Pink Floyd fame. Kweku Mandela, grandson of Nelson Mandela, also plays a role in production.
Alana, serving as the Creative Director of Watermelon Pictures, articulates the company’s vision, stating, “We aspire to create a platform where often overlooked voices can resonate. We seek to foster creative expression in the face of injustice. Through our films, we aim to educate and inspire individuals globally to confront inequality.”
