Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman has been elected as the sixth Emir of Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan for five-year term.
He is currently serving as the Emir of the Jamaat-e-Islami Karachi chapter. A vocal and active politician who has recently become one of the most popular personalities of Karachi, has entered into active politics from JI student wing -Islami Jamiat Talba – where he served as an elected the Nazim-e-Aala (president) of the student union.
The head of the election commission of the Jamaat-e-Islami Rashid Naseem has announced the the name of the newly elected Emir of the JI on Thursday.
Over 82 per cent votes have been casted for the election of the JI Emir, he told the journalists.
The counting of the votes for the next chief concluded on Wednesday night at the JI headquarters Mansoorah. As per the constitution of the JI, the election for the JI Emir held after each five years.
Over 45,000 Rukn (members) including 6,000 women are entitled to vote for the election of the JI Emir. They chose the Emir through secret balloting.
Earlier, JI Majlise Shura traditionally suggests three names to the members for the Emir’s position. But a Rukn could write the name of any other person who he/she believes has the better ability to lead the party other than the suggested names. Every Rukn has to mention his/her choice for Emir at the ballot paper in his/her own handwriting along with signature. The process of collection of ballot papers at district level and then their transfer to provincial headquarter to JI headquarters in Lahore completes under strict security.
JI Majlise Shura (a 100-member elected body for consultation and guideline for the JI Emir) had suggested three names Sirajul Haq, Liaqat Baloch and Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman to the members for suitable candidates for the JI Emir.
Haq is incumbent Emir and he will complete his second stint on April 8. Liaqat Baloch is vice-emir and Hafiz Naeem is the Emir of Karachi.
Syed Maududi was the Emir of the Jamaat-e-Islami and after him Tufail Muhammad, Qazi Hussain Ahmad and Syed Munawar Hassan served as the Emir of the JI respectively.
JI election commission is an elected body and the Shura choses it through balloting.
