29 people were killed in two provinces of Afghanistan after deadly Rains hit the region, official informed on Tuesday.
“Twenty-one were killed and six other people were injured” due to hail in western province of Farah province, said Muhammad Israel Sayar, head of the province Disaster Management Department.
All the victims were members of two families who were on a picnic, Israel said.
In separate incidents in Southern Kandahar, eight people including women and children died at several locations due to heavy rain, local management department said in the statement.
According to the statement a child drowned, while roof collapsed on family, killing one woman and three children in Kandahar.
Afghanistan is seriously affected by climate change that is driving the extreme weather conditions. It is 6th most vulnerable nation to climate change.
Also, it is among the poorest countries in the world who witnessed decades of war.
Drought, floods, land degradation and decrease agricultural production are the key dangers, Stephen Rotriques, the UN development agency’s representative in Afghanistan said in 2023.
In last year may hundreds of people were killed because of flash floodings, and vast agricultural land was swamped.
80% of people in Afghanistan depend on farming to survive.
