During a meeting of the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Interior, it was revealed that records of 2.7 million Pakistanis had been stolen from NADRA and that there are 27 tehsils without NADRA offices.
The National Assembly Standing Committee on Interior meeting was chaired by a member of the National Assembly Raja Khurram Nawaz and a former member of the National Assembly Syed Agha Rafiullah.
Syed Agha Rafiullah stated that there was no issue of data theft involving 2.7 million people; in fact, some prominent individuals were affected by the data leak.
Rafiullah added that the data leakers are the insiders, and no actions are taken against the data leakers.
During the meeting, the Chairman briefed the committee, explaining that expanding offices is not feasible, as it would lead to an increase in ID card fees.
He also mentioned that while the government had announced the expansion, it had not defined the areas for it.
Chairman NADRA clarified that NADRA has its funds, “We haven’t changed the ID fee, we can’t renew the cards, as long as the old card is valid. He added, that there are no NADRA offices in 27 tehsils, including tehsils from KPK and Balochistan, Muree, and Talagang districts.
PTI member Zartaj Gul, while sharing her views in the committee, questioned how caretaker governments can make appointments. She mentioned that some individuals had breached security and suggested they should be held accountable for their actions.
In response, the Chairman of NADRA clarified that appointments within NADRA are not influenced by the government, except for the appointment of the chairman, which is made by the government.
