150+ student protestors were detained in the Twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi. Students gathered at Morgah Road and demonstrated protest against the alleged rape incident in Lahore.
The protesters blocked the road, vandalized, and set fire to the building of Quaid Campus Islamabad.
In response, police officers used tear gas to dispel student demonstrations against the alleged rape of a student in Lahore’s private college.
Last week, news related to the alleged rape in Punjab College campus 10 went viral on social media. Punjab police arrested the security guard Aun who was allegedly involved in the incident.
As the news went viral students of Punjab College mobilized and staged protests outside different colleges in Lahore. At least 28 people were injured due to the clash with security guards and police officials on Monday.
Yesterday, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz called the alleged rape case “Fabricated News”, and blamed Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf supporters for spreading fake news on social media platforms.
Director of Punjab Group of Colleges (PGC) Agha Tahir and other facility members have termed the incident a “False Alert”
Meanwhile, Rawalpindi’s Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Operation Hafiz Kamran Asghar confirmed that around 150 violent student protesters were arrested.
“We don’t want to arrest students, however, if anyone will try to take the law into their own hands, we will proceed with legal actions against them”, SSP Asghar added.
“We are determined to arrest violent protesters and investigate,” the SSP said, Police have been deployed on the main roads outside the colleges in different areas in Rawalpindi.
Rawalpindi police posted a notification on Twitter, saying that police personnel have been deployed at various locations across the city. “Rawalpindi Police is fully braced to deal with any law and order situation,” it said.
“Parents are requested to keep their children away from illegal activities, the future of children can be ruined in case of legal action,” the police added.
Barani University’s students also protested against the incident within the premises of their campus in Rawalpindi.
The violent protests are spread in other districts of Punjab on Wednesday. The violent protests led to the death of a college security guard in Gujrat district, resulting in at least 185 people being charged with murder.
Whereas, in Lahore, PGC students demonstrated protest outside the Punjab College’s Campus 11, set fire to the parking area, shattered windows, and damaged doors.
450+ cases are booked against students for attacking and damaging PGC campuses in Gujrat’s Lalamusa and Kharian cities.
The Progressive Students’ Collective, a student organization that organized an anti-harassment rally on Tuesday, stated that it will continue to escalate protests “until the students’ demands are fulfilled.”
Meanwhile, the Lahore High Court (LHC) has summoned Punjab Inspector General of Police Dr Usman Anwar, Advocate General of Punjab Khalid Ishaq, and Lahore College for Women University’s (LCWU) registrar over a similar case.
