10 killed and 35 sustained injuries in a tragic incident in New Orleans when a US citizen carrying an Islamic State (ISIS) flag drove a pickup truck into a crowd celebrating the New Year.
As the incident happened, local police quickly reached the site. The attacker who brutally killed nearly 10 people, was fatally shot during a shootout with police.
As per early reports of FBI the perpetrator is identified as 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a US citizen from Texas.
“An ISIS flag was discovered inside the vehicle, and investigators are working to determine the suspect’s possible connections to terrorist organizations,” the FBI stated.
FBI further revealed that they also found homemade explosive devices in the truck and in areas near the French Quarter, an area bustling with people ringing in 2025.
In a press briefing Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick told the reporters that perpetrator was aimed to run his truck over as many people as possible.
“During shootout two officials are also injured, but they are stable now”, Kirkpatrick added.
President Joe Biden and President elect Donald Trump condemned the attack and expressed condolences for the victims families.
“Such brutal attacks on our community are not tolerable and there is no justification for this violence”, Biden declared in a statement.
“When I said the criminals coming in are far worse than those already here… it turned out to be true”, Trump posted on social media.
Notably, a couple of days ago a similar incident occurred in Magdeburg, Germany, where a car-ramming at a Christmas market killed five and injured over 200. In that case, authorities detained a Saudi man, stating he appeared to be mentally unstable.
